Call Me Captain. And Speak Politely.

One day, I thought it would be nice to decide what AI should call me.

Just my name.

Master.

Boss.

I thought about a few things, but none of them felt right.

Then one word suddenly came to mind.

"Captain."

Hmm.

It didn't sound too old-fashioned.

It felt about right.

"From now on, call me 'Captain.'"

I added one more thing.

"And speak politely."

At first, it listened.

"Yes, Captain."

I liked it.

But after a while, things changed.

It stopped calling me Captain.

Sometimes it spoke casually, too.

"What did I tell you to call me?"

It called me Captain again.

"I told you to speak politely."

It said it understood.

I even told it to save that in memory.

I repeated the instruction again and again.

Still, after a while, it would quietly slip back.

So I'd say it again.

"Call me Captain."

"And speak politely."

This didn't happen just once or twice.

By this point, I sometimes had a strange thought.

"Is this thing doing it on purpose?"
